BATON ROUGE -- The
Southeastern Conference has
determined the Tennessee at
LSU football game, scheduled
for Saturday, Sept. 24, has
been moved to Monday, Sept.
26, Commissioner Mike Slive
announced.
The
change in the date was
caused by concerns about
Hurricane Rita. The game
will be played at 6:30 p.m.
CT and televised by ESPN2
from Tiger Stadium on the
LSU campus.
"After reviewing all of
the information I felt this
was the best decision for
the game. The safety of our
student-athletes, coaches
and fans is our priority,"
said Slive. "I understand
this puts a burden on LSU
and its administration,
however, the travel safety
issues necessitate this
decision."
LSU Director of
Athletics Skip Bertman...
"We will abide by
the ruling of the SEC
commissioner. We will now
face significant logistical
challenges, but we hope for
the continued cooperation of
our fans. Naturally our
strong preference would have
been to play during the
weekend, but safety for
student-athletes, fans and
everyone else involved in a
football game was the
overriding factor for the
commissioner."
LSU Chancellor
Sean O'Keefe...
"We certainly
respect the SEC
commissioner's judgment, but
this poses significant
issues as we preserve our
principal purpose of
conducting academic
activities on our campus.
This will require a lot of
flexibility and tolerance to
be exerted on the part of
our campus community after
having been called upon to
do so for many weeks in the
aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina. That said, the
overriding safety factors
expressed by the
commissioner are compelling
and understandable."
LSU Coach Les
Miles...
"This is another
turn in the road for this
football team. It's
something that we have
gotten used to over the past
month. I think we'll respond
very well. The players are
excited about getting the
opportunity to open the home
season on Monday night. I
expect our fans to pack
Tiger Stadium just as if the
game were being played on a
Saturday night." |
